Carson McCarl – Wrapping Up Cali!

(Bill W) April 18, 2013 – Carson McCarl wrapped up four races in California last weekend, with a pair of events in Craig Smith’s Taco Bravo #39c Maxim. He scored top tens at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville on Friday and at Antioch Speedway on Saturday. Unfortunately, Carson is back home in Altoona, Iowa without a ride or sponsors for the Midwest.

An early pill isn’t always an advantage for qualifying. That was true on Friday at Watsonville. “We went out about fourth, and track was really greasy and wet,” says Carson. “My motor wasn’t running the best. We kind of got behind the 8-ball qualifying twelfth.”

He would finish second in his heat. “I started beside my car owner Craig Smith in the front row,” says Carson. “I got the jump and I had a feeling I had a pretty good lead. So I started moving around. I was diamonding the corners, and going to the bottom and stuff. That really wasn’t working that well, and I got passed going for the checkers.”

Carson would post outside row six for the main event at Ocean Speedway. “I was going really well,” he says. “I was up to about eighth. I slapped the front straightaway fence, and that knocked the Jacob’s ladder out of it. It was really heavy in three and four and there were a lot of holes. I was still trying the top in one and two a couple of times, and backed up to twelfth.”

Despite the malfunctioning sprinter, Carson held on for a good finish. “I went back to the bottom and I was super-tight without the Jacob’s ladder,” he says. “I was still able to get it turned, and ended up eighth…so that was a decent finish.”

It was on to Antioch on Saturday for an open 360 show. “We wanted to go there and get some laps,” says Carson. “Things started well. We were able to win our heat from the outside of row one.”

Carson put on a charge in the feature. “We started at the tail of the feature,” he says. “I was up to fourth on lap five and things were going well. There was moisture way up by the fence, but it was kind of treacherous, because it flattens off. I went up there a couple times and it worked for me. I could really hammer it coming off.”

Accidents are rare for Carson, but he pushed the envelope a little far and got upside down. “I was passing guys that way,” he says of his run on the top. “I thought that maybe I wasn’t entering hard enough, and I ended up getting in the fence and getting upside down.”

Carson is very thankful for the opportunity to partner with “Cowboy” Craig Smith. “I have to thank Craig Smith for all his help,” he says. “Also, I have to thank Jeff Delte, who was my crew chief all week.”

Now, Carson enters the unknown…where and when he may race next. “I’m trying to put some things together,” he says. “If absolutely everything goes right, I may be ready for the second week at Knoxville at best.”
