Carson McCarl – Muddy Start in Watsonville!

(Bill W) April 3, 2013 – It was baptism by mud for Carson McCarl at the Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, California last Friday night. Driving “Cowboy” Craig Smith’s Taco Bravo Maxim #39c, he got his feet wet on the bullring in local 360 competition. By the end of the night, he had pulled from the main event having trouble seeing.

Carson was unable to get a qualifying lap in to start the night. “We kind of got off to a rough start,” he says. “The shifter cable was too long in qualifying, and it kept popping out of gear. So we didn’t get a time.”

Starting eighth in his heat race, he began to move forward. “I was able to get up to sixth, and I was passing a guy for fifth,” says Carson. “They overwatered the track. It wasn’t his fault. He hooked a rut coming out of turn two, and that sent me into the wall. I broke a Jacob’s ladder. I could tell right away. We were starting last in the feature anyway, so I just pulled off.”

Starting at the tail of the feature, the Altoona, Iowa driver began to move through the field, challenging the top ten. “We were going well,” says Carson. “I was able to make my way up to seventh with about eight to go. There was a yellow, and I thought I had a decent shot at a few more cars. The power steering went out on me.”

His tear-offs were going away quickly too! “We went green, and it was tough to hang on,” says Carson. “I was doing o.k. I got around one more guy. At that point, I just ran out of tear-offs. I had to pull off at that point, because I couldn’t see.”

Using that amount of tear-offs is new to Carson. “I’d never used that many!” he says. “I was using like three tear-offs per lap. It was pretty crazy on a track that small. I could only put thirty on for thirty laps, so I was trying to save them as best I could. At Knoxville, I use about five. We’ll try it again this week and I’ll be pacing myself a little more.”

Carson will return for weekly competition at Watsonville on Friday.
