Carson McCarl – Didn’t Need the Week Off!

(Bill W) May 11, 2011 – After having a week off to savor his victory at the Knoxville Raceway on April 30, it will be back to action this Saturday for 16 year old, Carson McCarl. The Southeast Polk High School sophomore became the youngest sprint car winner ever at Knoxville, and the McCarl family is the first family to win in three different generations. Carson’s feat follows wins by father, Terry McCarl, who is fourth all-time in wins at Knoxville with 49, and grandfather, Lenard, has a pair of wins of his own.

Before he races on Saturday, he will be appearing at Kosama of Altoona, who will be sponsoring all three in the McCarl racing family at Knoxville on Saturday night. The three McCarl cars will be on display at Kosama of Altoona on Saturday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. It can be found on 3160 8th St. SW in Altoona.

Carson will be joining the McCarl family as they start their Kosama classes on May 23. To learn more about those fitness classes, call 515 689-5900 or visit http://altoona.kosama.com/ for more information.

Carson has been doing several interviews since his win, and is still trying to get a comfort level. “They are interesting,” he says. “But I really don’t enjoy doing them too much yet. I guess when they want to talk to you it’s a good thing though, so I appreciate getting to do them. It’s good practice for me.”

When Carson got back to school on Monday after his win, congratulations were waiting. “A bunch of my teachers congratulated me,” he says. “They had seen it in the paper. That lasted for a little bit.”

Having a week off was tough for Carson, who watched last Saturday’s IRA show at Knoxville. “I’m very excited to get back in the car,” he says. “Last Saturday at the track, I would much rather have been racing. Winning makes you want to get back in the car pretty bad.”

The win came in his first race at the track. He had run a 305 sprint last year in Bethany, Missouri and in West Burlington, Iowa. Both tracks don’t approach the speeds felt at Knoxville. How has the transformation been from micros to sprint cars? “A micro gives you a really good feel of what to expect, but it’s a lot different,” says Carson. “A micro shifts to the right rear, and a sprint car to the left rear. I’d been waiting to run at Knoxville forever, so it was great.”

The pursuit of win #2 happens this Saturday night!
